| What Gear Is This? | ||
|
If you've ever asked yourself this question, there's a good chance you drive a Mitsubishi Eclipse or an Eagle Talon and, by default, own one of our notorious transmissions. Not to worry though... There is an answer to the problem of fixing that mushy shifter. Most of the problem originates from the way the shifter plate is mounted to the car's body. I was told by Chris, a technician at Dick Brooks Mitsubishi, (Anderson, SC) that there's a reason as to why there are rubber bushings attaching the shifter plate to the car. They're designed to dampen vibration and noise. Nice try Mitsu, but not very functional. |

Please feel free to E-mail me any additional documentation or questions you have concerning this project only after having read the following sections:
|
||
| These are the kits that fix the problem: | ||
| The 1G and 2G kits contain 4 stepped bushings, 4 flat bushings, and
a cylindrical sleeve. The Pre-'91 kits contain just the 4 stepped
bushings and 4 flat bushings. You'll understand the difference
between kits by reading the Project
Progress section.
These kits are usable in conjunction with the short shifter kits out there. They actually make a good combination.

| In stock form: The more force and speed you use while shifting in a given circumstance, the greater the angle the shifter's plate assumes in relation to its mounting points and cables. The greater the angle, the more likely you'll miss-shift due to the relative position of the gear pattern (which changes as the shifter's plate flexes on its mounts). | With the kit installed: Movement of the shifter's plate is eliminated. The biggest difference you'll realize is that the shift pattern becomes much more defined and/or static. Do you remember that last 2-3 shift at the track when you checked your rear view mirror for tranny parts? | |
| I make no claims to the effectiveness of this kit. I'm not a Certified Mitsubishi Technician. I haven't asked any employee of Mitsubishi to help in the design of this kit. I'm unaware of any repercussions this kit may have on the function of other parts in the shifter assembly. I waive any responsibility for damage to your car or yourself as a result of the use of this kit. | ||
